FAQ

How do you avoid Heat in the Mesa?
Stay out of direct sunlight: use shade and the canyon, carry a Parasol, use Sunscreen or glide with a Glider. Aloe Vera reduces Heat you already have, and the oasis removes it. Crossing the plateau at night also works below Ascent 5.
How do you tell a mirage from real luggage?
Ping it. If the ping lands on the object it is real; if it hits the ground behind it, it is a mirage.
Where is the Tomb?
On the plateau in the first half of the Mesa, before the canyon. In the current pool it is open on every Mesa day.
How often does the Mesa appear?
It shares region three with the Alpine. In the current 208-island pool it appears on 103 days.

Overview

A Mesa canyon

The Mesa is a hot desert split by a large canyon, and the other option for region three besides the Alpine. It was the first biome added after launch (patch 1.20.a). In the current pool it appears on 103 of 208 days.

Hazards

Hazard What it does How to handle it
Blazing sun 2.5 Heat every half second in direct daytime sun Shade, Parasol, Sunscreen, Glider; Aloe Vera to recover
Cacti Thorns, and you stick to them A teammate frees you with a helping hand
Tumbleweeds Seek out scouts, knock them over, Thorns Bigger ones hurt more; sidestep early
Tornadoes Throw scouts on the plateau Crouching sometimes avoids them
Antlions Traps baited with fake explorer’s luggage, heavy Injury Be wary of a lone briefcase in the sand
Scorpions Heavy Poison, in the caves Pick one up and throw it, or cook and eat it
Dynamite Lights when you get close, then explodes Grab and throw it before it goes off

Old pickaxes in the cliffs work like rusty pitons and break after six seconds.

Mirages

Luggage, or even a whole oasis, can be a mirage that fades as you approach. Ping it: a ping that lands on the object means it is real.

Variants

The Cactus Hell variant

Mesa layouts are weighted: no variant (most common), Cactus Forest, Cactus Hell, Dynamite Hell, Scorpions Hell and the rarer Tumbler Hell. Tornado Hell was removed in patch 1.64.a. Like the rest of the terrain, the variant is fixed for the day; today’s Mesa map shows it.

The oasis

The oasis

A cold pool on the plateau with two capybaras: one always holds a Yellow Winterberry, the other wears a cowboy hat. Standing in the water removes Heat. Capybaras here count for Animal Serenading too.

The Tomb

The Tomb entrance

The secret Tomb entrance is on the plateau before the canyon. In the current pool it is open on every Mesa day (103 of 103). Inside is the Ancient Idol, the key to the 24 Karat badge. The Tomb guide walks through it, and today’s Tomb status tells you whether it is worth the detour.

Food and items

Coconuts, Yellow Winterberries, Red and Gold Prickleberries, button, bugle and cluster shrooms (each with a poisonous look-alike), Chubby Shrooms, Medicinal Root and cooked Scorpion. Natural items include Aloe Vera, Dynamite, Shelf Fungus, Remedy Fungus, Warp Fungus and Magic Beans. Luggage here often has Sunscreen and Dynamite.

The richest biome for luggage

The Mesa averages 73 regular, 19 big, 4.9 explorer’s, 2.5 ancient and 1.4 clown luggage, several times more than any other region. That makes Mesa days the best days for the Plunderer badge (15 luggage in one run) and a good bet for the Jester badge. Compare all regions in the luggage types guide.

Tips

  • Cross the plateau at night when you can. On Ascent 5+ nights are cold, so this trick stops working.
  • Follow moving shadows and use the canyon’s depth for shade.
  • Hold an item between your scout and the sun to block it in a pinch.
  • Cool Cucumber: never exceed 10% Heat for the whole biome. Bring a Parasol from clown or regular luggage and hop between shadows.
  • Daredevil: fire yourself across the canyon in a Scout Cannon.

The rest are in the full badge list.
