Positions are part of the daily island, so every lobby finds the same boxes in the same places until the 17:00 UTC reset. What is inside is rolled when the box is opened. Today’s luggage locations lists every box by region.
How many spawn per island
Counted across all 208 islands in the current map pool:
| Type | Average per island | Fewest | Most |

The Mesa dominates: it averages 73 regular, 19 big, 4.9 explorer’s and 2.5 ancient luggage on its own, far more than any other region. Mesa days are the easy days for the Plunderer badge (open 15 luggage in one expedition).

Luggage and big luggage

The bread and butter of every run. Both draw from a biome-specific pool, so the same box gives different things depending on where it stands: Heat Packs in the Alpine, Antidotes in the Tropics and Roots, Sunscreen and Dynamite in the Mesa, Candlesticks in the Gloom and Citadel. Rare drops include the Pirate’s Compass, Jetpack and Glider. One of each is guaranteed at the Crash Site.
Explorer’s luggage

An orange briefcase (also called climber luggage) with exactly two items from a climbing-gear pool: Energy Drink, Rope Spool, First Aid Kit, Piton, Chain Launcher, Fanny Pack, Rescue Claw, Rope Cannon, Glider or Jetpack. This is the box to prioritise on higher Ascents, where climbing costs more stamina.
In the Mesa, be suspicious of an explorer’s luggage sitting alone in the sand: antlion traps use a fake one as bait and deal heavy Injury. Surviving an attack earns Megaentomology.
Ancient luggage

Dark, chained and marked with a heart-shaped gem. It holds one mystical item, which counts for the Esoterica badge, but opening it costs 20 Injury. The co-op pool includes the Cursed Skull, Scout Effigy, Ritual Dagger and Bugle of Friendship; solo runs drop those four. Ancient luggage has spawned more often since patch 2.0.a.
The Scout Effigy is the only revive that adds no Curse, so it is worth opening ancient luggage early on Ascent 7. See how to revive. Today’s ancient luggage has the day’s positions.
Clown luggage

Added in patch 2.0.a. Always six items (Berrynana peels, balloons, bugles, parasols, lollipops, dynamite, rocketpacks, scout cannons), all thrown out on opening except balloons. Opening two in one run earns the Jester badge; the clown luggage guide covers the drop rates and route.
Luggage trap

The mimic. It only spawns in the Citadel and contains nothing. Opening it releases gas that inflicts 5 Drowsy every half second to everyone within 16 m, and being caught counts as a trap hit for the Medieval History badge. Tell it apart by its slightly open lid and upright handle. Across the current pool, Citadel days average about one.
